Earlier today, we promised a reference review of the two Media Pad tablets that Huawei released last year. This is a look at the Huawei Media Pad, the anchor model of the pair.
Overview
One of the highlights of this compact tablet is that it has GSM voice communications operability built right into the mobile device. Along with that are the SMS and MMS features.
The screen resolution in the Media Pad closely rivals the high-selling Asus Transformer Prime TF700T with its 10-inch screen and 224 ppi specification.
The Media Pad has an aluminium back panel that lightens the carry load and slides the model in ahead of even the Kindle Fire, and it has a far greater array of features and capabilities to back up its
“better than”
…boast.

We wanted to pass along some information on the Opera Mobile and Opera Mini browser that will be subject of an announcement in the forthcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 that starts in a few days.
The Opera Mobile and Opera Mini browsers were announced in 2010 and has become the number one mobile browser in use today. It’s only fitting that a major update is announced during the MWC 2012.
Many users think that the Opera Mobile browser and the Opera Mini browser are one and the same. After all, they both work on the mobile phone or tablet, don’t they? Alas, there are differences, but the Big Red O is still the same.
Opera Mini sends a website through the Opera servers first. There, the website is compressed for viewing on your smartphone. The compression speeds loading time by two to three times, bringing faster surfing and navigation. Users also use less data than with a stock browser, which could ultimately save them considerable money in bandwidth use.
Opera Mobile uses the mobile phone’s own technology and hardware to display compressed web pages, which give total bandwidth reductions by as much as 80 percent.
Opera is expected to detail the major update more specifically during MWC.
HTC Loses Patent Ruling
Just a quick note here to update you on an Apple patent battle.
Last year, HTC filed a patents counter-suit against Apple in 2010, stemming from HTC’s purchase of the small company, S3. HTC bought the company to gain control of some of its patents – not an unusual step at all in the mobile industry.
In November 2011, a patents court ruled that Apple did not violate one of the HTC-held patents, but HTC appealed that decision – also not uncommon.
HTC has lost the appeal regarding the graphics control programme that Apple uses in some of its mobile devices.
As most people who are interested in mobile technology probably already know, the annual Mobile World Congress 2012 is gearing up to start on the 27th. The event is one of the most important in the mobile industry and will run through 1 March in Barcelona, Spain.
Whist the Consumer Electronics Show is the highlight of the electronics showcases, the Mobile World Congress spotlights just mobile technology, accessories, apps and programs.
In years prior, mobile phone manufacturers, app developers and service providers held press conferences, held and attended lectures and symposiums and rolled out the red carpet on opening day. That day, the 27th of February still has those events, but more attendees hold major press conferences on the 26th instead of waiting until the 27th and losing half the press crowds.
Samsung, HTC, Huawei and a few other major players have already scheduled their ‘media events’ and sent invitations for their press conferences on the eve of the MWC.
At least once each day, there is a keynote speech, and those presentations are given by trend-setters, establish leaders of the mobile industry. To date, here are only a few of the scheduled speakers and topics to which we can look forward to hearing.
Warren East, CEO of ARM, will be speaking, as will Franco Bernabe, Chairman and CEO of Telecom Italia Group and Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, AT&T. Brian Dunn, CEO of Best Buy, and many others will be joining them.
App contest are many during the Mobile World Congress. Established developers compete against each other, and laymen developers can submit their concept apps in competition with each other and consideration for purchase by the Big Dogs.
And lest we forget, mobile phone and tablet makers often introduce major products in and around MWC time, and that’s when we have the most fun. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on some of those new mobiles and tablets we’ve been writing about and getting a much closer look at them beyond the showcase information we’ve gotten.
What mobile phone or tablet are you looking forward to seeing in stores and online soon?
Asus has enjoyed tremendous sales success and model popularity with their flagship tablet, the Asus Transformer Prime. Now it seems that Asus will be presenting another Transformer tablet with a slightly different model number: Could it be a Transformer Prime 2?
Overview
The Asus Transformer Prime has a model number of TF201. The leaked, speculative model carries a model number of TF300T. What’s the difference? Well, we hope you opened in another tab or window the Transformer Prime review we did previously and have it available for a comparison.
There are similarities between the models, to be sure, but there are differences as well: Internal memory, thickness and weight are only three.
Hopefully, Asus will present this mobile tablet during the Mobile World Congress 2012, and we will know – and let you know – more about this tablet then.
We are still trying to figure out why Asus would release an almost identical model to the Transformer Prime this soon after the Prime’s release. One analyst noted the possibility that increased per-unit profitability from lower-quality production materials might be one reason.

Overall opinion: None possible at this point; we just don’t know enough to warrant even an early guestimate.
The HTC Jetstream, also known as the HTC Puccini, was the first Honeycomb tablet device that was compatible with AT&T’s ‘True 4G’ LTE network in 2011. Beyond that distinction, users reported a problem with random reboots early on; HTC was aware of the incompatibility between the AT&T SIM card and the tablet and eventually devised a work-around, so users could use their data plans instead of removing the SIM and using only WiFi.
Beyond that, the mobile device has a lot going for it, though, so let’s get to it, shall we?
Overview
The HTC Jetstream provides fast 4G support, an excellent, high-resolution camera and enough RAM to avoid those irritating lags and freezes when you multi-task.
It has a familiar size and weight to it that lends a fair comfort ratio whilst not breaking your wrists carrying or manipulating it. The brushed aluminium side and back exterior gives this tablet a stylish appearance that sets this device apart from others in its class.
The Jetstream is fully compatible with HTC’s Scribe Pen, but it’s not included in the box, and separately priced, it’s not exactly a casually purchased accessory. In the US, it sells for around .00.
