While the desktop-bound GeForce GTX 680 is undoubtedly the most exciting release from NVIDIA today and the true flagbearer for their new Kepler microarchitecture, NVIDIA actually has a whole host of releases ready to go on the notebook front. We've already had a chance to check out the GeForce GT 640M in action, but it's far from the only member of the old/new GeForce 600M series. Today we have details on their complete 600M series from top to bottom; some of it is exciting and new, and some of it is just the GPU industry up to its same old marketing tricks. Read on for the full details.

In today’s Mobile News, we examine a disclaimed rumour by Microsoft and the answer to LG’s L quiz. Keep reading to find out more.

Errant Image Denial
Not long ago, an image of a Microsoft Office logo on an iPad was leaked. Since Microsoft had just released the OneNote app for iPad, the mobile industry blogosphere went crazy with speculation.

Today, a Microsoft spokesperson denied that the image was real, saying,

“The … story is based on inaccurate [rumours] and speculation.”

Microsoft followed up that statement made to ZNET that the image was, indeed, fake.

However, if you carefully examine the actual words, Microsoft never denied that the Microsoft Office package would not be on the new iPad – merely that the image was not real.

Microsoft has yet to confirm or deny the appearance of the Office package on an Apple iPad.

However, Win7 tablets using a beta version of Windows 8 OS have Microsoft Office included, so Microsoft does already have the popular PC package programmed for tablet use.

We’ll see if our guess of

“Yes, it will be included or a downloadable option”

…is correct in a few months, if not sooner.

LG Announces Its MWC Line-Up
Well, earlier today, LG gave the answer to yesterday’s L tease: LG will be presenting three Optimus L-series models at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barclelona in a few days.

The L series currently comprises the Optimus L3, the Optimus L5 and the Optimus L7. All three models will sport a metallic design with a back panel that looks like leather. (It’s not; it just looks like leather.) They will also present what LG calls its

“floating mass display”

…that is closer to the glass and appears as if it is floating.

All three models present a squared-corner appearance and are thin smartphones. The Optimus L3 sports a 3.2-inch display and has the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. The Optimus L5 and L7 both have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, but the screen sizes differ. The L5 has a 4.0-inch display, while the Optimus L7 has a 4.3-inch screen.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

Nvidia's announcement today is a bit interesting, as it seems to head-off one of the most commonly perpetuated rumors that I read online in the SoC space. Namely, that certain SoCs are "incompatible" with LTE. In an attempt to stave-off this misconception from taking root with Tegra 3, Nvidia today is announcing a next-gen pact with LTE baseband suppliers Renesas and GCT Semiconductor.

Both Renesas and GCT Semiconductor currently have UE Category 3 LTE basebands of their own. GCT Semiconductor has its GDM7240 which supports FDD-LTE and has integrated RF, and Renesas has their own TDD/FDD-LTE baseband which also supports DC-HSPA+ and GPS. The end result of this pact is some definitive proof that Tegra 3 works with LTE (which isn't a surprise at all). In addition, we fully expect that Tegra 3 will have no problem integrating with other popular LTE basebands from the rest of the usual suspects in that space as well, given their implied compatibility with these existing LTE parts from Renesas and GCT.

As most people who are interested in mobile technology probably already know, the annual Mobile World Congress 2012 is gearing up to start on the 27th. The event is one of the most important in the mobile industry and will run through 1 March in Barcelona, Spain.

Whist the Consumer Electronics Show is the highlight of the electronics showcases, the Mobile World Congress spotlights just mobile technology, accessories, apps and programs.

In years prior, mobile phone manufacturers, app developers and service providers held press conferences, held and attended lectures and symposiums and rolled out the red carpet on opening day. That day, the 27th of February still has those events, but more attendees hold major press conferences on the 26th instead of waiting until the 27th and losing half the press crowds.

Samsung, HTC, Huawei and a few other major players have already scheduled their ‘media events’ and sent invitations for their press conferences on the eve of the MWC.

At least once each day, there is a keynote speech, and those presentations are given by trend-setters, establish leaders of the mobile industry. To date, here are only a few of the scheduled speakers and topics to which we can look forward to hearing.

Warren East, CEO of ARM, will be speaking, as will Franco Bernabe, Chairman and CEO of Telecom Italia Group and Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, AT&T. Brian Dunn, CEO of Best Buy, and many others will be joining them.

App contest are many during the Mobile World Congress. Established developers compete against each other, and laymen developers can submit their concept apps in competition with each other and consideration for purchase by the Big Dogs.

And lest we forget, mobile phone and tablet makers often introduce major products in and around MWC time, and that’s when we have the most fun. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on some of those new mobiles and tablets we’ve been writing about and getting a much closer look at them beyond the showcase information we’ve gotten.

What mobile phone or tablet are you looking forward to seeing in stores and online soon?
